Mangaluru: Indian Navy vessel INS Surat, carrying 18 crew members rescued from the fire-struck Singapore-flagged container ship MV Wan Hai 503, arrived at the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) in Panambur, Mangaluru, late Monday night.
According to police sources, the vessel docked at the port around 10:45 pm. Among the rescued crew members, two are critically injured, four sustained minor injuries, while twelve escaped unharmed. However, four crew members remain missing at sea.
MV Wan Hai 503, en route from Colombo to Mumbai, caught fire on June 9 approximately 78 nautical miles off the Beypore coast in Kerala. Responding swiftly to the distress call, the Indian Navy deployed INS Surat, which successfully rescued 18 of the 22 crew members onboard. The rescued crew includes eight Chinese nationals, four Taiwanese, four from Myanmar, and two Indonesians. The Indian Coast Guard, along with immigration, port, and police authorities, is extending all necessary support to ensure timely and effective medical care.
According to a press statement, out of the 22 crew members onboard, six were injured in the fire. Two — Lu Yanli (17) and Sonitur Haeni (18) — sustained critical injuries, while four others suffered minor injuries: Xu Fabao (3), Guo Linino (4), Thein Than Htay (15), and Kyi Zaw Htoo (16). Twelve crew members were uninjured and have been safely accommodated at a hotel in Mangaluru. They include Wei Chun-Ju (1), Tag Peng (2), Kan Hiue Wal (5), Lin Chun Cheng (6), Feng Li (7), Li Fengguang (9), Thet Htut Swe (10), Guo Erchun (11), Holik Asyari (14), Su Wei (20), Chang Ren-Han (21), and Wu Wen-Chi (22). Meanwhile, search efforts continue for the four crew members still missing at sea. They have been identified as Yu Bo-Fong (8), San Win (12), Zaenal Abidin (13), and Hsieh Chia-Wen (19).
