Mangaluru : The Mangaluru city police have arrested five persons in Pune allegedly involved in the abduction of a jewellery store owner from Kanhangad in Kerala and stealing 350 g of gold biscuits, worth Rs.35 lakh, from him.
Hari Bhanudas Thorat was abducted by a group of six persons after he came out of Mangaluru Central on August 13. The group posed as Customs officials and took Mr. Thorat away in a vehicle. The accused snatched the gold biscuits and dropped Mr. Thorat on the same day in Antaravalli near Kumta of Uttara Kannada district.
Mr. Thorat filed a complaint with the Kumta police and the same was transferred to the Mangaluru South police station.
Deputy Commissioner of Police H.N. Mithun said two teams Central Crime Branch sleuths and personnel from Central Sub Division were formed.
After analysis of CCTV camera footage and gathering technical evidence, the teams traced the accused to Pune.
The teams arrested five persons on Monday evening. They were brought to Mangaluru on Tuesday and produced before the jurisdictional magistrate. The magistrate granted police custody of the arrested persons.
Mr. Mithun told reporters in Mangaluru on Tuesday that the police have seized the vehicle used by the arrested. The police were questioning the arrested to know about others involved in the incident.
The stolen gold biscuits are yet to be recovered. The police are yet to gather information about the criminal history of the arrested, Mr. Mithun said.
