Mangaluru : Four undertrial inmates at the Dakshina Kannada District Jail have been booked under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act (KCOCA) for assaulting a fellow undertrial, said Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy.
The victim, Mithun, who is accused in a case under the Ullal police station limits, was attacked on July 9 around 5 PM by fellow inmates — Dhanu alias Dhanush Bhandari, Sachin Talapady, Dilesh Bangera alias Dillu, and Layi Vegas. The accused allegedly assaulted Mithun when jail staff were not around and demanded Rs 50,000 from him. They also threatened to kill him if he informed the jail authorities.
Fearing for his life, Mithun initially refrained from filing a complaint. However, he ended up paying Rs 20,000 through PhonePe to two mobile numbers provided by Sachin, using his wife’s assistance.
The incident came to light on July 12, when Assistant Commissioner of Police (Central) and the Inspector of Barke Police Station visited the prison for an inspection. Following this, the Jail Superintendent Sharanabasappa lodged a complaint at the Barke police station.
Based on the complaint, a case has now been registered under the stringent KCOCA against the four accused inmates. According to the commissioner, the accused are already facing multiple criminal cases. Under KCOCA provisions, they could face up to five years of imprisonment, which may be extended to life imprisonment. If the assault had resulted in death, the punishment could include life imprisonment or the death penalty.
