Mangaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alert across the three coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada, with a forecast of heavy rains (64.5 mm to 115.5 mm) accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
The IMD has issued orange alert in the three coastal districts and nine other districts on Wednesday in light of likely very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.5 mm) with gusty winds.
It has issued red alert in three coastal districts and in Kodagu, Hassan, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru districts on June 13, predicting extremely heavy rainfall (more than 204.5 mm) with gusty winds.
The disaster management authorities of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have cautioned people against venturing out during the extremely heavy rains. Farmers have been asked not to go to their fields, while fishermen and tourists were warned against entering rivers and the sea.
In the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday, Dakshina Kannada recorded an average of 11.1 mm rainfall. The cumulative rainfall recorded in Dakshina Kannada so far this year was 1,181.5 mm.
Sullia taluk recorded an average of 19.7 mm, followed by 17.6 mm in Mulky, 16.2 mm in Mangaluru, 15.4 mm in Kadaba, 15.2 mm in Ullal, 13.1 mm in Moodbidri, 12 mm in Bantwal, 7.8 mm in Puttur, and 2.4 mm in Belthangady taluks, in the 24-hour period.
As many as 13 electricity poles, three transformers, and 0.65-km-long power supply line were damaged in the period.
