Mangaluru : Marking a significant milestone in regional aviation, IndiGo successfully launched its daily direct flight service between Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) and the newly inaugurated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Thursday. The commencement of this service on Christmas Day aligns with the operational debut of India’s latest greenfield airport, placing Mangaluru among a select group of cities to have Day One connectivity to Navi Mumbai.
The inaugural day witnessed an overwhelming response from travelers. The first flight from Navi Mumbai, 6E 865, arrived at Mangaluru with 187 passengers, while the return leg, flight 6E 866, took off with 186 passengers. This near-total occupancy highlights the robust demand for travel between coastal Karnataka and the expanding Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). To celebrate the occasion, Mangaluru International Airport organized a traditional lamp-lighting and cake-cutting ceremony, involving a passenger family to mark the personal significance of the flight.
With the addition of this new route, the connectivity between Mangaluru and the MMR has been significantly bolstered. Travelers now have five daily flight options to the Mumbai region—four operated by IndiGo and one by Air India Express. This increase in frequency offers enhanced flexibility for business professionals and leisure travelers alike. Navi Mumbai now stands as the seventh domestic destination directly connected to Mangaluru, joining the existing network of Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai (CSMIA), and Thiruvananthapuram.
Navi Mumbai International Airport, developed and operated by Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), is designed to de-congest the primary Mumbai airport and cater to the long-term aviation growth of the region. The successful coordination between the airline and airport authorities to start operations from multiple cities simultaneously reflects the execution discipline of the Adani Group. This new link is expected to provide a seamless travel experience while boosting economic and cultural ties between the two coastal regions.
