Karkala : In a grim turn of events, a case of attempted murder has been upgraded to a murder charge at the Karkala Rural Police Station after the victim succumbed to her injuries. The deceased, Geetha, had been battling for her life at a private hospital in Mangaluru for several days. Her husband, Sunil Kumar (44), a resident of Gummettu in Nuralbettu village, remains in custody in connection with the fatal assault.
The incident occurred on the morning of January 27, when a heated domestic dispute broke out between the couple. According to police reports, Sunil Kumar attacked Geetha with a lethal weapon with the clear intention of killing her. The assault left her with life-threatening injuries, following which she was rushed to a Mangaluru hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
While Geetha was undergoing treatment, the Karkala Rural Police arrested Sunil Kumar and produced him before the court, which remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody. Despite the efforts of the medical team, Geetha failed to respond to treatment and breathed her last at approximately 5:46 AM on February 2. Following her demise, the police have officially altered the charges against the accused to Section 302 (Murder), and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway.
