Kasaragod : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put Kerala’s northern districts Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on red alert for extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday.
The remaining nine districts are on orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Sunday, according to the Saturday evening update.
As per the five-day weather update of the IMD, Kerala is likely to receive heavy rainfall till at least Wednesday (June 18).
An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over north interior Karnataka and Marathwada and extends upto 5.8 km above mean sea level. A trough runs from west-central Arabian Sea to coastal Andhra Pradesh across the upper air cyclonic circulation.
A cyclonic circulation persists over parts of the Bay of Bengal coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Following an early monsoon onset over Kerala on May 24 this year, the southern State had experienced intense rainfall in the subsequent days. It was then followed by a lull in rainfall activity.
