Udupi: The Malpe police have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of a violent robbery at Malpe harbour by arresting the prime suspect within 24 hours of the crime. The arrested individual has been identified as 20-year-old Muthanna, a native of Kanakagiri in Koppal district, who was residing in a rented accommodation near Malpe Lake. During the arrest, the police successfully recovered the snatched gold necklace, which weighs 37.570 grams and is valued at approximately ₹6 lakh.
The incident occurred in the early hours of February 20, when Dayanand Kundar, a local fish trader, was targeted while at work. According to the victim’s statement, an unidentified man approached him under the guise of inquiring about fish prices and suddenly threw a chemical powder into his face. Following this, two other accomplices joined the fray, brandishing a knife and demanding his jewellery. When Kundar resisted, the trio assaulted him on his face and back before forcibly snatching his six-sovereign gold chain and fleeing the spot.
The swift police operation was carried out under the guidance of Udupi DySP Belliappa and Malpe Circle Inspector Ramachandra Nayak. A dedicated team led by Malpe PSI Eeranna Shirgumpi, along with officers Hussain, Adarsha, and Basavaraj Haidri, tracked down and apprehended the suspect on the night of February 20. Muthanna has since been produced before the court, and the police are continuing their efforts to trace the remaining accomplices involved in this daylight robbery.
