Udupi: In a significant success for the district police, the Kaup police have arrested a high-profile interstate criminal involved in a major daylight burglary in Mallar village. The accused, identified as Umesh Balegar (also known as Umesh P or Umesh Reddy), is a seasoned offender with a staggering criminal record spanning multiple states.
The Modus Operandi of the Mallar Theft The arrest pertains to a theft reported on December 4 at the residence of Raghavendra Kini, ‘Ramanatha Krupa,’ in Mallar village. In a lapse of security, the homeowner had locked the house and placed the key inside the electric meter box before leaving. Exploiting this, the accused retrieved the key, entered through the front door, and locked himself inside while he ransacked the house. He made away with 72 grams of gold jewelry and silver articles worth approximately ₹3.91 lakh.
Strategic Investigation and Arrest Considering the professional nature of the theft, a special investigation team was formed under the guidance of Udupi SP Hariram Shankar and Additional SP Sudhakara S. Naik. Led by Kaup Circle Inspector Ajmat Ali G, the team conducted a meticulous probe utilizing technical surveillance and intelligence. The operation culminated in the successful apprehension of the accused on January 2.
A Prolific Criminal Record Investigations revealed that Umesh Reddy is a habitual offender with at least 33 registered cases against him. His criminal footprint extends across:
Karnataka: 17 cases (including Subrahmanya, Belthangady, Sirsi, and Chikkamagaluru).
Interstate: 16 cases across Kerala (Thrissur, Mavoor), Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.
The accused is a fugitive in several jurisdictions, with numerous Non-Bailable Warrants (NBW) and LPC warrants pending against him. He has already been convicted in eight previous cases and had been evading arrest in several districts, including Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru, where courts had issued proclamation orders against him.
The Success Team The high-stakes operation was executed by a dedicated team including Kaup CI Ajmat Ali G, Padubidri PSI Anil Kumar T. Nayak, Kaup PSI Shubhakar, and personnel from the CDR wing. Their coordinated effort has successfully put an end to the long-standing run of a dangerous career thief.
