Mangaluru : Thousands of Catholic faithful across the Diocese of Mangalore gathered at their respective parishes on Sunday, March 29, 2026, to celebrate Palm Sunday. This significant day marks the beginning of the Holy Week and commemorates Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The celebrations were characterized by traditional fervor, featuring the blessing of palm leaves and solemn processions that transformed church courtyards into sea of waving fronds, symbolizing the arrival of the King of Peace.
At the Holy Spirit Church in Mukka, under the Surathkal deanery, the main liturgical services were presided over by the Bishop of Mangalore, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha. Dressed in red vestments to signify the passion and royalty of Christ, the Bishop blessed the palm leaves and led a large congregation in a symbolic procession. During the solemn mass, Bishop Saldanha emphasized in his homily that Palm Sunday is an invitation to welcome Christ into the “Jerusalem” of one’s heart, noting that the path to the Resurrection inevitably passes through the sacrifice of the Cross. He was joined by Fr. Stany Pinto, Parish Priest of Mukka, and Fr. Praveen Dsouza, Designate Director of ICYM Mangalore.
As the Lenten season reaches its climax, the Diocese is now preparing for the Paschal Triduum—the three most sacred days of the Christian calendar. Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha’s upcoming schedule includes Maundy Thursday at Mukka (6:00 PM), Good Friday services at Panja Church in Puttur (4:00 PM), and the Easter Vigil at Rosario Cathedral on Saturday evening (7:15 PM). The week will conclude with a Solemn Easter Sunday Mass at the Bishop’s House Chapel in Kodialbail at 7:00 AM, marking the joyous celebration of the Resurrection.
