Mangaluru : It is truly heartening to see “Akshara Santa” Harekala Hajabba finally being recognized by Mangalore University with an honorary doctorate. For a long time, there was a sense of lingering disappointment that despite being a Padma Shri awardee, the university—located just 3 kilometers from his village had overlooked his contributions during past convocations. While rumors of this honor had circulated for the last two years, they often ended in frustration when his name vanished from the final lists. This year, however, the anticipation was met with a positive outcome, a secret closely guarded until the official announcement by Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.L. Dharma.
The Vice-Chancellor played a pivotal role in ensuring this recognition came to fruition, showing immense persistence to honor Hajabba during his own tenure. This effort was ultimately validated by the Governor of Karnataka and Chancellor of the University, Thawar Chand Gehlot. It is a moment of pride not just for the recipient, but for everyone who has followed Hajabba’s journey from a humble orange seller to a revolutionary educator.
As the formal ceremony takes place this Saturday, March 28, the community celebrates the transformation of Padma Shri Harekala Hajabba into “Doctor” Harekala Hajabba. We must applaud Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.L. Dharma for his determination and remember those who initially brought Hajabba’s selfless service into the limelight. This doctorate is more than just a title; it is a long-overdue tribute to a man who proved that literacy and vision have no boundaries.
