Mangaluru : The Mangaluru city police have carried out a major operation against a drug trafficking network that specifically targeted the student community in the educational hub. Following a rigorous crackdown, five students involved in drug peddling were taken into custody. Mangaluru Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy revealed that the operation was triggered after a concerned parent informed the police about finding a small packet of ganja with their son. Investigations into the source of the drugs led the police to a group of five students from different colleges who were residing in private rented rooms instead of college hostels.
The investigation uncovered that these students were sourcing narcotics from external suppliers, repackaging them into smaller sachets, and distributing them among their peers. The police have identified a distribution list containing approximately 40 students from six different colleges, along with ten individuals from outside the student community. Commissioner Reddy stated that the identified students and their parents will be summoned for mandatory counseling sessions to address the issue and prevent further involvement in substance abuse.
In a video message, the Police Commissioner issued a stern warning and advisory to parents and educational institutions. He emphasized that parents must remain vigilant regarding changes in their children’s behavior and monitor those who choose to live in private accommodations rather than supervised hostels. He noted that a collaborative effort between parents and college authorities is essential to curb this menace. He urged anyone with information or suspicions to contact the police immediately, assuring that early intervention can effectively resolve such problems.
The Commissioner further highlighted that this is a significant case where five students were directly involved in the peddling aspect of the trade. By possessing a detailed customer list across various colleges, the accused had established a systematic supply chain. The police department has confirmed that strict legal action is being initiated against the arrested peddlers, while the focus remains on rehabilitating the users through proper guidance and surveillance.
