Uppinangady : A major tragedy was averted on Thursday due to the extraordinary presence of mind shown by a passenger after a KSRTC bus driver suffered a sudden onset of severe chest pain while driving. The incident occurred near Karvelu in Perne village while the bus was en route from Subramanya to Karwar.
The driver, identified as Govinda Naik, was navigating the vehicle when he began experiencing acute physical distress. As the pain intensified, the movement of the bus became erratic, causing panic among the commuters. Noticing the loss of control, a passenger named Salmanul Faris immediately rushed to the driver’s cabin. Without losing a second, Faris managed to take control of the moving vehicle and steered it safely to the side of the road, bringing it to a complete halt.
Following the safe parking of the bus, the unconscious driver was rushed to the Uppinangady Government Hospital for emergency first aid. Given the severity of the medical condition, he was later shifted to a specialized hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment.
The swift action and bravery of Salmanul Faris have earned him widespread appreciation from the public and fellow passengers, as his timely intervention saved dozens of lives from a potentially fatal accident. Later, with the assistance of transport controllers, the bus was moved to the Uppinangady bus stand.
