Mangaluru : Member of Parliament (MP) Captain Brijesh Chowta has taken serious note of the significant delay in the payment of crop insurance claims under the Restructured Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme (RWBCIS) to lakhs of eligible farmers across the state, including Dakshina Kannada district. Recognizing the severe financial hardship faced by the farming community, the MP convened an urgent meeting with concerned departmental officials and directed them to take immediate steps to release the pending insurance amount.
The RWBCIS, a flagship scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, typically ensures that insurance companies credit the eligible amount to farmers’ accounts by November. However, despite the onset of December, the insurance payouts remain stuck, causing considerable distress among the beneficiaries. Taking the prolonged delay seriously, MP Capt. Chowta held a review meeting last week with officials from the Horticulture and Agriculture Departments to understand the reasons for the lapse.
During the emergency meeting, departmental officials explained that the primary reason for the delay was the recent excessive rainfall, which had disrupted the process of filing reports related to weather-based crop damage. Nevertheless, Capt. Chowta emphasized that regardless of the technical reasons, ensuring timely financial relief for the farmers was paramount.
The MP instructed the officials to rigorously follow up with the insurance companies to expedite the process. He directed them to take immediate, appropriate action to ensure that the insurance amount is released to the beneficiaries as quickly as possible, thereby mitigating the financial difficulties faced by the farming community during this crucial period.
