Mangaluru : Students at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, who reportedly fell ill due to suspected food poisoning, are now on the path to recovery. According to reports, more than 50 students suffered from symptoms including stomach ache, vomiting, and diarrhea. The incident occurred following the “Virasat” cultural extravaganza, which was organized on the institute’s campus from February 4 to February 8. In response to the situation, the NITK administration has issued a clarification stating that there is no need for panic as the situation is under control.
During the cultural festival, a food mela was organized on the campus featuring several external food stalls. While the exact cause of the illness has not yet been confirmed, authorities are investigating whether the contamination originated from the external stalls, the regular hostel mess food, or the drinking water supply. To determine the precise source of the outbreak, food and water samples have been collected and dispatched to a laboratory for detailed analysis.
Among those affected, approximately 50 students sought medical attention at the NITK Health Care Centre. The institute’s medical team provided prompt treatment, and most students have successfully recovered and been discharged. The administration continues to monitor the health of the student body while awaiting the official test results to prevent such occurrences in the future.
