Putturu : The Dakshina Kannada District Cyber Crime Police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with an online fraud case where a resident of Puttur was swindled of over ₹2.37 lakh. The accused has been identified as Avinash Ramesh Gowda, originally a native of Maharashtra and currently residing in Krishnarajapet, Mandya. The arrest followed a detailed investigation into a complaint filed by Yashodhara, a resident of Puttur, who fell victim to a sophisticated phishing trap.
According to the victim’s statement, the fraudster contacted him from multiple mobile numbers, posing as a representative of a well-known insurance company. Initially, the caller pressured Yashodhara to purchase a new insurance policy and pay the premium. When the victim declined the offer, the accused cleverly shifted tactics, offering to help him cancel his existing insurance process. Under the pretext of processing the cancellation, the swindler managed to gain the victim’s trust and extracted his credit card details along with the sensitive One-Time Password (OTP).
Using this confidential information, the accused illegally transferred a total of ₹2,37,036 from the victim’s credit card to a different account. Following the complaint, a case was registered at the Dakshina Kannada Cyber Crime Police Station under Section 66(D) of the IT Act and Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A dedicated police team tracked the digital footprint and apprehended the suspect on February 11. The accused was produced before the court, which subsequently remanded him to judicial custody.
