Udupi : Congress leader and former chairman of the Legislative Council V.R. Sudarshan said on Tuesday that the State’s coastal region would prosper if people did not encourage hate speeches.
Addressing presspersons in Udupi, Mr. Sudarshan, a member of the panel set up by Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to study the reasons and recommend solutions for the communal unrest in coastal districts, said that 2% of the population vitiated the social harmony in the coastal belt while others had become mute spectators to it. A majority of people silently watched and tolerated it. People should not support and promote those who made hate speeches, he said.
Mr. Sudarshan said the coastal belt was far ahead in education sector and was known for its intellectual strength. Yet it had become communally sensitive. “Hate speeches must be avoided by all political parties and individuals for the region’s development,” he said.
Mr. Sudarshan added that Udupi’s progress required political diversity, and warned that the dominance of a single party could harm the district’s future.
Rajya Sabha Member Nasir Hussain said: “Communal violence causes economic setbacks and deters investment. Strict legal action should be taken against miscreants.’‘
Mr. Hussain called for stronger monitoring of sand and drug mafias and the need to curb them. He promised that the Congress would take all murder cases seriously.
Meanwhile, the panel concluded its two-day visit to Udupi district on Tuesday. The team visited major religious places, including Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt, Jamia Masjid, and Mother of Sorrows Church, before holding discussions with various civil society groups.
