Mangaluru: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Panambur police have successfully busted an interstate ganja smuggling syndicate operating within their jurisdiction. During the operation, officials seized a massive haul of 22.25 kg of illegal ganja and arrested four individuals involved in the racket. The arrested suspects have been identified as Karan Babu Ram Jadhav (27) from Maharashtra, Sameer Shah (19) from Madhya Pradesh, M.H. Mayyadi (48) from Hejamadi Kodi in Udupi, and Ibrahim Khalil (47) from Kavoor, Mangaluru.
The operation was executed on February 21, 2026, following a precise tip-off. A team led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (North Sub-Division), along with the Panambur Police Sub-Inspector and staff, conducted a raid near the Jokatte Cross Railway Bridge where the suspects were attempting to sell the contraband brought from outside the state. In addition to the ganja, valued at approximately ₹11,12,500, the police confiscated six mobile phones and two scooters used for transporting the drugs. The total value of the seized property is estimated to be around ₹12,30,500.
Investigations revealed that the primary suppliers, Karan Babu and Sameer Shah, sourced the ganja from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. They then funneled it through local associates Mayyadi and Ibrahim Khalil for distribution across various regions, including Udupi, Malpe, Karkala, Mulki, Surathkal, Panambur, and Mangaluru city. It is reported that the group had previously engaged in similar illegal activities in the coastal belt. A case has been registered at the Panambur police station under sections 8(C) and 20(b)(ii)(c) of the NDPS Act, and further investigation is underway.
