Mangaluru : The city Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said that the police will not stop organising Yakshagana and other cultural events at night, but there will be reasonable restrictions on the use of sound systems to ensure that it did not harm senior citizens and patients.
Reddy said that for any celebration, an organiser has to get police permission to use the sound system. A personnel from the local station will visit the venue and permit the use of the sound system appropriate for the venue. Each officer of the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police has been provided with device to measure decibel of sound.
“We have no intention to stop any celebration. We only want that the sound does not disturb others,” he said and added that there will be no blanket permission for use of sound systems for cultural events. The police will not allow use of high decibel sound systems.
Taking the instance of the Ganesha Festival celebrations held recently at the Nehru Maidan, Mr. Reddy said the procession for immersion of the Ganesha idol started around midnight and went on till around 3 a.m. The sounds used for the tableaux in the procession were far above the permissible limit. “But we allowed it. Similarly, we will not disturb any celebration,” he said.
