Padubidri : In a major breakthrough, the Padubidri police have successfully arrested a lorry driver in Pune, Maharashtra, who had been convicted in a fatal road accident case from 2002 and had managed to evade law enforcement for 23 long years. The arrested convict has been identified as Vilas Shinde, a resident of Bhor in Maharashtra’s Pune district.
The tragic incident occurred on the morning of September 7, 2002, near the Moolur Mosque in Bada village along National Highway 66 under the Padubidri police station limits. Vilas Shinde was driving a mini goods lorry rashly and negligently from Mangaluru toward Udupi when he struck a schoolboy walking on the roadside. The child sustained severe injuries and succumbed during treatment. Following the accident, Padubidri police registered a case, completed the investigation, and filed a charge sheet in court. After due trial, the court found Shinde guilty, sentencing him to three months of imprisonment and imposing a fine of ₹1,000.
However, immediately after the verdict was pronounced, Vilas Shinde slipped away and went into hiding. As he remained untraceable without leaving any clues for over two decades, the court issued a Long Pending Case (LPC) warrant against him. Under the directions of Udupi District Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, a special team from the Padubidri police station launched a targeted operation to track down the absconder.
Gathering credible intelligence, the team discovered that Shinde was currently residing in Pune and working as a lorry driver. The special police team immediately traveled to Maharashtra, apprehended Vilas Shinde, and successfully produced him before the court to face execution of his sentence.
