Mangaluru : Former Minister B. Ramanath Rai has strongly criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of political hypocrisy. Speaking after paying floral tributes at the Mahatma Gandhi death anniversary program held at Congress Bhavan in Mallikatte on Friday, Rai remarked that while the Prime Minister praises Mahatma Gandhi on international platforms, his actions and the conduct of his followers within the country often dishonor Gandhi’s legacy. He stated that this contrast highlights a deep-seated hypocrisy in the current administration’s approach to the Father of the Nation.
Rai emphasized that the independence of India was a direct result of Gandhi’s non-violent struggle against British rule, a model that continues to inspire the world today. He noted that while various nations honor Bapu as a global symbol of peace and humanity by erecting statues, certain followers of the Prime Minister in India have been seen insulting Gandhi’s image through acts of violence. Furthermore, Rai alleged that the BJP-led central government is systematically weakening Gandhi’s vision of ‘Gram Swaraj’ through new amendments to the MGNREGA scheme, effectively stifling Gandhian thoughts on a daily basis.
The commemorative event saw the participation of several prominent leaders, including MUDA Chairman Sadashiva Ullal, Padmaraj R. Poojary, and S. Appi, among others. A large gathering of party activists including Dinesh Muluru, K. Harinath, and Shubhoday Alva were also present to pay their respects. The speakers collectively voiced their concerns over the preservation of secular and non-violent values in the current political climate, urging the public to uphold the true spirit of Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings.
