Honnavar : The shores of Honnavar have witnessed a heartwarming return of the rare Olive Ridley sea turtles, which have started nesting once again. On Friday, local residents spotted a turtle approaching the shore at Apsarakonda beach. Recognizing the significance of the sighting, they immediately ensured its safety and alerted the Forest Department, sparking a wave of enthusiasm among environmentalists.
While Apsarakonda was historically a prominent nesting site, the number of turtles arriving had drastically declined over the past three to four years. Environmentalists attributed this decline to increased commercial activity and tourist interference. Specifically, the trend of ‘Fire Camps’ during pre-wedding photoshoots on the beach had become a major deterrent. The bright light from fires and the loud noise of gatherings scared away these sensitive creatures, preventing them from reaching the sand to lay eggs.
However, a strong awareness campaign led by locals against such activities has yielded positive results. With the cessation of fire camps this season, the tranquil environment has encouraged the Olive Ridleys to return. Local residents Sridhar Kharvi, Jagadish Rama Kharvi, and Ravi Mesta, who reported the sighting, have been commended for their vigilance. The Forest Department will now oversee the protection of the nests to ensure the hatchlings safely reach the ocean.
