Udupi : In a historic and first-of-its-kind event, Lakshmi Hebbalkar, the Minister for Women and Child Development and Udupi District In-charge Minister, hoisted the national flag at the iconic St. Mary’s Island to mark the 77th Republic Day. Addressing the gathering at the island, which is recognized as one of the largest in Karnataka, the Minister unveiled a visionary roadmap for the development of the state’s coastline. She emphasized that the government is eager to foster tourism by integrating various islands along the coast, a move she believes will open new doors of opportunity not just for the region, but for the entire nation’s economy.
Minister Hebbalkar highlighted a significant gap in the current utilization of the state’s natural resources, noting that there are 116 islands across Karnataka that have remained largely neglected over the decades. She lamented that despite possessing world-class potential, these resources have not been effectively tapped for tourism. Referring to a high-level symposium recently held in Mangaluru, she mentioned that the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and elected representatives have already begun deliberating on a comprehensive strategy to transform the coastal belt into a global tourism hub. She sought the cooperation and guidance of the local community to ensure that this new developmental leap is both sustainable and inclusive.
The ceremony was marked by a unique display of maritime strength, as the Minister arrived at the island after inspecting a fleet of 11 Coastal Security Police boats. Describing the experience as “thrilling,” she took a moment to express her deep gratitude to the frontline defenders of the coast. She hailed the Coastal Security Police, the naval personnel, and the local fishermen—who serve as vital informants for national security—as the “true heroes” of the nation. She lauded their commitment to protecting the country’s borders and citizens, often at the risk of their own lives, and extended her salutations to the volunteers dedicated to keeping the beaches clean.
The event saw the participation of several prominent dignitaries, including MLC Channaraj Hattiholi, Coastal Development Authority Chairman M.A. Gafoor, and District Guarantee Scheme Implementation Committee Chairman Ashok Kumar Kodavoor. Senior administrative officials, including Deputy Commissioner T.K. Swaroopa, ZP CEO Prateek Bayal, and Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, were also present to witness this landmark celebration. The Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that the development of these islands goes hand-in-hand with the preservation of their ecological and strategic importance.
