Mangaluru : To further strengthen the safety and security of women passengers, particularly those travelling alone, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Palakkad Division has introduced a focused initiative under the programme “Meri Saheli”. As part of this initiative, dedicated RPF teams are deployed at five major stations in the division. These teams identify women travelling alone, sensitise them about safety precautions, and provide them with key contact information such as the Rail Madad helpline (139) and digital grievance platforms like Instagram and CPGRAMS for immediate assistance in case of distress. Passenger feedback and suggestions are also collected regularly to improve the programme further.
A total of 64 women RPF personnel have been specially nominated for this mission. On average, 11 women RPF staff attend designated trains every day and interact with around 230 solo women passengers. In 2025 alone, the initiative has benefitted 37,276 women travellers, receiving highly positive responses from the public.
Additional Security Measures
- Mixed Train Escorts:
All major night trains are now escorted by mixed teams of male and female RPF personnel, ensuring a secure and respectful travel environment for women. These escort teams are equipped with body-worn cameras for greater transparency and accountability.
- Enhanced Station Vigilance:
Daily joint patrols by the RPF and GRP are carried out during peak hours to curb nuisance activities at stations. Surprise checks in ladies’ coaches have also been intensified. In 2025 alone, 971 offenders — including trespassers, unauthorised passengers in reserved coaches, and male passengers in ladies’ compartments — were apprehended.
- Prompt Complaint Handling:
The Rail Madad helpline (139) has been widely publicised to ensure passengers receive timely assistance. During 2025, 38 complaints were registered through Rail Madad and other online platforms, all of which were promptly resolved, with offenders being detained or arrested where necessary.
Public Appeal
The RPF, Palakkad Division, urges all passengers to cooperate with security personnel, follow safety guidelines, and use official platforms like Rail Madad (139) to report concerns in real time. The RPF reiterates its firm commitment to women’s safety across the railway network and will continue to strengthen its efforts to ensure every journey remains safe, secure, and comfortable.
