Mangaluru : In a significant operation, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) at Mangaluru Junction seized 201 used mobile phones valued at approximately 10.05 lakh, which were being illegally transported by train. The seizure took place on March 9 around 3:00 AM during a special intensive surveillance drive conducted by the Palakkad Division of the Southern Railway. This heightened security is part of an ongoing effort to curb the illegal transport of cash, gold, and valuables in light of the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections.
The discovery was made on Platform No. 3 during a thorough inspection of the Jamnagar–Tirunelveli Junction Express. While inspecting a general coach, RPF Head Constable Sujeesh and Constable Ramakrishna noticed three unclaimed bags on the upper luggage rack. Upon inspection, the bags were found to contain 201 mobile phones of various brands. Although categorized as “old,” officials noted that they are not obsolete models, leading to suspicions that they were stolen from railway passengers and were being transported for resale.
Following the seizure, authorities reviewed footage from the body-worn cameras of the duty staff, which revealed two suspicious individuals present in the coach at the time the bags were located. The Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) and the Divisional Anti-Crime and Detection Squad are currently working in coordination to track down these suspects. The seized items and the case details have been handed over to the Railway Police for further legal action and a detailed investigation into the source of these devices.
