Mangaluru : In a recent executive meeting of the Konkani Bhasha Mandal Karnataka (KBMK), a tribute was paid to senior writer Gladys Rego, who passed away on July 21, 2025 and had donated 27 books to the Konkani language.
Speaking on the occasion, KBMK Secretary Raymond D’Cunha Taccode praised Gladys Rego as a dedicated literary worker who searched libraries for various documents and records of literature and published books at her own expense.
Poet Jossey Pinto recalled that she also supported Konkani newspapers financially to aid in their circulation and publication.
Juliet Fernandes noted that it is not easy for women to manage household responsibilities and still contribute to literature, acknowledging the challenges faced by women writers.
Geeta Kini, a senior literary companion of Gladys, shared that during literary conferences she attended, Rego was actively involved in selling her own and others’ books and was always engaging with attendees throughout the event.
KBMK President K. Vasanth Rao said that KBMK is a home for all Konkani-speaking people and that they give priority to everyone. He recalled having seen Rego as a close associate of “Balomam” from Panchkadayi.
Treasurer Suresh Shenoy, Adolph D’Souza, Naveen Nayak, Meenakshi Pai, Zeena Fernandes, Aravind Shanbhag, and Shanti Veronica were also present and offered floral tributes.
