The Origin of Tulunadu
The homeland of dynasty which was founded by the Vijayanagar Empire based on the East Karnataka,governed by native feudatories.Tulunadu is a region which has 2 districts Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district,also it has north part of Kasragod which is upto Chandragiri river in Kerala
The language
Tulu language is a Dravidian. RamaSwami Iyer and PS Subrahmanya suggested Tulu is one among the oldest language in Dravidian family nearly 2000yrs ago. Tulu has 2dialects one spoken by ShivaliBrahmin and other spoken by all other tulu speaking community and other local communities. It has its own scrip but not used for centuries. Tulu speaking are called as Tuluvas or Tulu people. Other languages are also spoken in mangalore such as Beary language,Havyaka,Gowdas Konkani and lots more.
Parashurama
It is said that tulunadu is built by Parashurama, the son of Jamadagni and Rebuke. He is also said as the 6th avatar of Lord Vishnu. When Parashura came to do tapas near Sahyadri hills, Lord Shiva told him to do tapas in Kudroli but there were full of water and ocean when Parashurama asked ocean god to take back the water ocean refused,anger Parashurama took his axe and threw it, the ocean god got scared and took back the water still the axe layed down. This was how Parashurama created or built tulunadu
The language and Script
Tulu is a Dravidian who’s speakers are concentrated in 2 constant, Dakshina Kannada and kasragod. The people who speak tulu language are called as Tuluva or Tulu people there are also many people who stay here and different languages are spoken they are Beary, Konkani ,Kannada and some people speak Malayalam also.
Tulu language did not have any particular script. Tigalari in a Southern Brahmic script used in coastal region of karnataka,also prevelant in Kasragod district Kerala, devolved the Grantha script. Tulu script is the mixture of Kannada and Malayalam in it. Till text used in the article is transliterated into Latin script
The Culture of Tulunadu
Every culture has its own uniqueness, like the same way tulunadu people have their own uniqueness. Yakshagana is a night-long dance and performed and practised by Tuluvas with a great fanfare.The tiger dance is a unique form of folk dance in a region fascinating the young and old alike, which is performed during dussara. Bhoota Kola which is called as spirit worship done during the night time. Kambala or buffalo race is conducted in water filled paddy field.Nagaradhanae or snake worship is practised according to the popular belief of Naga Devatha to underground and guard the spices on top.
Yakshagana
Yakshagana is a traditional Indian theater form, developed in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kasragod. It combines dance, music, culture, make up, stage technique with a unique style and form. In tulu language yakshagana is called as Aata.It is usually performed in dusk to dawn. Stories are drawn from Mahabharata,Ramayan,Bhagvat Gita and other epic of hindu and jain. There are 2 types of yakshagana one is tenku and other is balaga. 1st yakshagana was introduced in Udupi. In early days yakshagana would be for 12hrs but in current days it will be around 4-5hrs. In recent days female also play.
Nagaradhanae
Snake worship is one of the unique tradition in coastal district. In Tulunadu snakes are not just seen as deities but an animal species which should be respected and protected for multi social reasons, snakes are with power. In every Tulunadu bunt house there a scared place called nagabana ,which is the place for worshipping of lord snake. Nagamandala,Ashlesha Bali are the different types of pooja done for snakes to appease them. In Tulunadu, agriculture is pretty dominant that too paddy is the main crop, in these fields snakes help in saving the crop from rodents, this may also be the reason for worship of snake. Nagamandala and Ashlesha Bali are drawn on the sacred land and with sacred colour of 2 devine of male and female snake
Pilivesha (Tiger Dance )
Pili yesha in Tulu Masque, is a folk dance, which is unique in coastal. It is usually performed in the month of Dasaraa or Janmashtami. During the time of dussara to honour goddess Durga, whose favoured animal is tiger,this dance is done. Young males form a troop of 5-10 or morw which will have 3-5 male painted tigers and costumes to look like tiger. There will be band set for the males to dance. This act is performed on the road, temple and some may go to individual houses. Until the last day of Navratri they perform this. The paint is painted on the naked body and will kept on the body of 2 days, and later on the same they retouched it. The painting will be using the thick layer, sometimes if may also burn the skin.
Cock fight (Kordha Katta)
It is also one the traditional aspect of Tuluadu. It is conducted in vicinity of temple or near bars and still goes on,. It is conducted at evening or night. It is a event of rural community in Mangalore. The cocks are breed with special care only for this event. To watch this event more than 100 people gather around atmosphere. The cocks are brought from Erode, Selam and Kottam Kshetra of Tamil Nadu. Mangalore city alone have 5 major shops vicinity where the cocks used in the cock fight are sold. The cock are tied with 3-4 inches sharp blade which hurts the cock when they fight, leading to the death of one cock. Entertainment and Prestige issue, there have been few criticizing the game for the amount of cruelty attached to it, initial for entertainment but later for gambling purpose. It is banned and said that it is a illegal business, but there are few who continues this inspite of issues.
The Buffalo Race (Kambala)
Around 800 yrs back, the buffalo race which is called as Kambala,was a festival in dedicated to kadri, Lord Manjunath.It is beleived that it has to be celebrated to pleaze the god for the good harvest. Anually for centuries in coastal district is tradition is followed. It is contest where 2 pairs of buffalo tied ploughs are made to race on slush-filled tracks with a jockey giuoly them while they run. Once it was said that Kambala should be banned but later the Supreme Court gave permission to celebrate this. Buffalo are not really speed runners. But no they are made to run as fast as 100mtrs in 12sec. Earlier winner of buffalo race used to be rewarded with a coconut, but in recent days medals, cash and trophies are given.
Food of Tulunadu
Tulunadu is also well know for its food. Dishes include neerdosa,masal dosa, chicken ghee roast, chicken sukka, Kori roti, bangudae, pulimunchi,beeja manoli upkari, kadabu and pathrodae.
Neer Dosa: literally means water dosa prepared from rice batter. It is delicacy from Tulunadu region and part of Udupi
Chicken Ghee roast: popular bunt Tuluva Manglurian chicken recipe whose origin go back to a small town Kundapur, close to mangalore. It has a firey red, tangy and spicy with a flavor of ghee roasted spicy
Pathrodae
It is a vegetarian dish. It is made from colocasia leaves stuffed with rice flour and flavoring such as spices, tamarind and jaggery.
King fish fry is a super delicious fish fry from coastal region. Flaky king fish steaks maintained with ginger, garlic and spices and then shallow fried to golden perfection make a perfect combination for rice
Pundi Gatti
Usually a round shaped soft rice dumpling belonging to manglorian. Prepared by soaking the rice, cooking and finally steaming the rice. Pundi Gatti is popularly known as pundi gasi
