Udupi : The Brahmavar police have arrested two individuals on charges of circulating derogatory content and misinformation regarding a Sai Baba Temple on social media platforms. The arrested persons have been identified as 56-year-old Santosh Kumar Shetty, a manager at a Teacher Cooperative Bank in Kundapur, and 62-year-old K. Nagaraj, the owner of Kalpataru Industries in Koteshwara. The arrests followed the discovery of a controversial video shared within a professional WhatsApp group.
The investigation began after the police tracked a video posted by Mr. Shetty in a WhatsApp group consisting of advocates and other professionals on the evening of January 28. The video allegedly made provocative claims about the misuse of temple funds and urged viewers to share the content widely. Upon reviewing the material, the Brahmavar police registered a suo motu case under Sections 196 (1) and 353 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertain to promoting enmity between groups and circulating statements that lead to public mischief.
Further technical analysis revealed that the source of the video was Mr. Nagaraj, who had initially sent it to Mr. Shetty. Acting on this information, a police team led by Sub-Inspectors Ashok Malabagi and Sudarshan Doddamani conducted a targeted operation and took both men into custody on Thursday. The authorities have emphasized that circulating unverified or inflammatory content that hurts religious sentiments will be met with strict legal action.
