Udupi : Hariram Shankar, the Superintendent of Police (In-charge) for Coastal Security Police, has announced a 45-day window for all water sports operators in Udupi district to obtain necessary permits and licenses. This directive applies to various activities, including tourist boats, houseboats, kayaking, parasailing, banana rides, surfing, and jet skiing. Operators are required to secure approvals from multiple departments, including the Department of Tourism and the Port Department, to ensure legal compliance.
The SP warned that failure to comply with these regulations within the stipulated period could lead to severe legal consequences. If any fatal accidents occur after the 45-day deadline due to violations of these rules, operators will be prosecuted under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. For motorized boats, owners must possess a registration certificate from the Port Department, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from various departments, an approval letter from the Tourism Department, valid insurance, and a Sarang certificate for the boat operator. Non-motorized activities like kayaking also require certification from the National Institute of Water Sports.
Strict safety measures have been prioritized, making life jackets mandatory for all tourists during water sports. Additionally, boats must be equipped with lifebuoys, first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, and other essential safety gear. Operators are also instructed to install awareness boards at activity sites for the public. Only certified personnel with a Sarang certificate are permitted to operate boats, and all documentation must be presented for inspection by the authorities whenever requested.
