Udupi : The Udupi police on Thursday arrested Social Democratic Party of India State Secretary Riyaz Kadambu alias Mohammed Riyaz in connection with the case registered against him for his alleged hate speech on social media. Riyaz was lodged in Hiryadka Prison.
On Friday, he was produced before the jurisdictional magistrate, where he said he will not indulge in hate speech and will cooperate in the investigation of the case. The magistrate then released him on bail and warned him that failure of these conditions will lead to bail cancellation.
A suo motu case was registered by Udupi Town Police against Riyaz for his video on WhatsApp, in which he was seen reacting to the the Udupi police’s arrest of people who had disposed of a bovine skull on a public road. He is heard saying that whenever such incidents happen, political leaders and Sangh Parivar-affiliated members instigate the general public against Muslims. Determining his comments as those done to promote enmity, the police registered a case for offences under Section 353(2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The Principal District and Sessions Judge K.S. Gangannavar had granted anticipatory bail to him on August 1. The Judge had directed him to appear before the investigation officer within 20 days. Since he failed to appear before the officer within the stipulated period, the order lapsed.
