Udupi: The government on September 29, 2025, terminated the contract of Special Government Prosecutor Y.T. Raghavendra, who served in the District POCSO Court in Udupi, citing charges of dereliction of duty and professional misconduct.
The decision was formalized by an order from the Under Secretary of the Home Department, which concluded that the explanations provided by Mr. Raghavendra regarding the allegations against him were insufficient and unreasonable.
The termination was based on multiple serious charges. Firstly, Mr. Raghavendra was found to have been repeatedly absent from court sessions without authorization, failing to inform the court or arrange for alternative legal representation in his absence. This conduct was cited as a key instance of dereliction of duty.
Secondly, a separate case of alleged caste abuse had been registered against the prosecutor at the Udupi Women’s Police Station.
Furthermore, Mr. Raghavendra, who held the special government post, was subject to a contractual restriction barring him from representing clients in any other court or in private cases. Despite this, a complaint, complete with documentary evidence, was filed by an individual named Madhu alleging that the prosecutor had violated this restriction by taking on external clients.
Following the immediate cancellation order, Y.T. Raghavendra has been released from duty and has officially handed over charge of the POCSO court to Jayaram Shetty, the government prosecutor of the Udupi Principal District and Sessions Court.
