Mangaluru : The Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, U.T. Khader, emphasized that it is the core responsibility of both the government and administrative officials to foster a social environment where citizens can live happily. Speaking to media persons in Mangaluru, he addressed several regional concerns ranging from traditional sports to healthcare infrastructure.
Responding to queries regarding the police restrictions imposed on traditional ‘Koli Anka’ (cockfighting) in Dakshina Kannada district, the Speaker maintained a cautious stance. He stated that the state government must deliberate on the matter and arrive at a suitable decision. “Occupying a constitutional position as the Speaker, I am bound by certain limitations and cannot express personal opinions on such sensitive issues publicly,” he explained.
Addressing the healthcare needs of the coastal region, U.T. Khader shared significant updates regarding the establishment of regional centers for the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in Mangaluru. Noting that similar units have already been established in Mysuru and Kalaburagi, he highlighted that such facilities in Mangaluru would benefit patients from four to five neighboring districts. Furthermore, he noted that the presence of these prestigious government institutes would help maintain a balance in the treatment costs offered by private hospitals for heart and cancer care.
Regarding local infrastructure, the Speaker expressed concern over the Mahakalipadpu railway underpass, which remains closed to the public despite the completion of work. He assured that he would discuss the matter with the district in-charge minister and relevant officials to ensure the route is opened for commuters from the Ullal and Mangaluru city sides immediately.
Reflecting on the recent legislative proceedings, the Speaker informed that the session was highly productive, with the passage of 23 bills. These include the Appropriation Bill and the Karnataka Land Revenue (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025. He also touched upon the decorum of the house, urging coastal MLAs to uphold their reputation for gentleness and simplicity, which has been a long-standing tradition of the region.
