Mangaluru : The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Mangaluru unit, submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), demanding that the municipal slaughterhouse located in Kudroli should not be reopened. The slaughterhouse had previously been closed because the small premises could not comply with several essential laws and regulations required for operation.
Reasons for Closure and Security Concerns
The VHP highlighted that attempts have been made to establish a new, spacious slaughterhouse in an alternative location due to the unsuitability of the Kudroli site. Furthermore, the Kudroli slaughterhouse is situated in a strategic location, making it easy for “vested interests” to engage in illegal activities. The VHP strongly argues that the facility should not be restarted at this specific site.
Allegations of Illegal Cow Slaughter
The VHP’s primary concern centers on the illegal slaughter of cows (Go-Mata), which is banned in Karnataka and is considered sacrosanct by Hindus. The VHP stated that:
Past Illegal Activity: Even when the facility was operational, illegal and unlawful cow slaughter was allegedly being carried out.
Case Records: Numerous police cases have been filed over the past decades, citing the violent and illegal transport of cows, including calves, for slaughter at the Kudroli facility, confirming the illegal activities taking place there.
Vested Interests: Since the closure, meat supply has not been affected in Mangaluru, suggesting that the pressure to reopen the facility stems from groups with a specific intent to run an illegal beef trade.
Fear of Conflict and Sentiments
The VHP’s appeal stressed that the primary objective of the vested groups is the slaughter of the revered bovine species (bulls, cows, and calves), which violates several existing animal slaughter laws. The forced transportation and slaughter of stolen cows and calves cause immense pain to the Hindu community, potentially leading to social conflicts, riots, and hurting religious sentiments. The VHP insists that the facility, which clearly aims to violate laws and slaughter bovines, should not be allowed to operate again.
VHP Representatives Present
The VHP delegation present during the submission of the memorandum included District President H. K. Purushotthama, Divisional Secretary Shivananda Mendon, District Cow Protection Chief Harish Kumar Shetty, District Secretary Ravi Asaigoli, and Co-Secretary Naveen Konaje.
