Mangaluru : The Mangaluru City Police have successfully recovered and handed over 233 stolen mobile phones to their rightful owners. These phones had been reported missing between September 15 and October 30 within the City Police Commissionerate limits. DCP (Law and Order) Mithun H.N. provided this update on Friday, confirming that a special team led by the ACP of the CEN (Cyber Economics and Narcotics) police station was instrumental in tracing the devices.
Public Advisory and Safety Measures
DCP Mithun issued a strong advisory to the public regarding mobile safety and cyber security. He urged citizens to use the central ‘Sanchar Saathi’ portal immediately to block their mobile numbers if their devices are stolen or lost. Furthermore, he appealed to everyone to report all such incidents to the national Cyber Crime Helpline, 1930, emphasizing that public awareness is crucial in preventing and solving these crimes.
Warning on New ‘Call Merging’ Fraud
The DCP also cautioned citizens about a new technique of cyber fraud involving call merging and conference calls. In this method, fraudsters manipulate victims into sharing sensitive information, such as OTPs, to illegally transfer funds. While the Mangaluru Commissionerate has not yet reported any cases utilizing this specific ‘call merging’ technique, DCP Mithun urged the public to remain extremely vigilant and cautious against all types of unsolicited calls and requests for personal data.
