Surathkal : The Department of Mining Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) Surathkal inaugurated a six day short term training programme today on “Health and Safety & OSHWC Code 2020 in Mines”. Scheduled from June 8 to 13, the programme brings together thirty one professionals from leading mining organizations across India for structured training in mine health, safety management systems, and the Government of India’s unified Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020.
The inauguration ceremony was presided over by Prof. Subhash C. Yaragal, Deputy Director, NITK Surathkal. Prof. Harsha Vardhan, Head of the Department of Mining Engineering, joined the ceremony along with Deans, functionaries, and faculty members of the Institute.
Participating professionals represent a cross-section of the mining sector, drawn from organisations including Coal India Limited, Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), JSW Steel (Goa and Bellary operations), Fomento Resources Private Limited (Goa), Karnataka State Minerals Corporation Limited (KSMCL), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) — Panna, Kirandul Complex, and Bailadila Complex — Vedanta Limited (Iron Ore), NRB Group, and Ecomine. Several participants hold senior positions including Deputy General Managers and equivalent roles within their respective organisations.
All training sessions will be delivered by faculty of the Department of Mining Engineering, NITK Surathkal. The programme covers mine safety engineering concepts, risk assessment-based safety management systems as per the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) framework, human factors in accident analysis, behaviour-based safety, noise measurement and control, machine-induced vibration, computer-based statistical analysis of injury data, and the implications of the OSHWC Code-2020 for the mining sector. In addition to classroom sessions, participants will undertake visits to NITK’s specialised laboratories, the Model Mine, the Digital Library, KIOCL’s Pellet Plant (Mangaluru), and the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA).
The programme aims to equip mining personnel with the knowledge and practical skills required to identify and control workplace hazards, implement safe working procedures, promote effective use of protective equipment, and build a strong organisational safety culture. It also seeks to familiarise participants with the mine-specific provisions of the OSHWC Code-2020, the Government of India’s new unified safety and welfare framework for the sector.
The Department of Mining Engineering, established in 1984, has developed focused expertise in Mine Environment, Safety Engineering and Management, Mine Planning, and Rock Mechanics. To support this programme, the department has established a dedicated Mine Health and Safety Laboratory with support from KSMCL — one of its kind in the region. The department maintains academic and research collaborations with the University of Utah (USA), NAVOI State Mining Institute (Uzbekistan), KSMCL, and IMMT Bhubaneswar, and has produced more than 1000+ graduates since inception.
