Udupi : The Udupi Lokayukta Police have officially launched an investigation following reports of a massive irregularity in the Udupi RTO office. The case involves the fraudulent registration of a luxury imported Mercedes-Benz car, valued at approximately ₹2 crore, which resulted in a loss of nearly ₹1 crore in road tax revenue to the government.
Modus Operandi of Fraud:
The Lokayukta police gathered information based on a newspaper report and procured the necessary documents. The initial inquiry revealed that officials and staff at the Udupi RTO office had abused their authority by manipulating the car’s model details. The imported car, purportedly a February 2025 model, was illegally registered as a 2017 model using details of a lower-priced vehicle of the same company, thereby evading substantial road tax.
Case Registration and Investigation:
Based on these findings, the Lokayukta police submitted a report to the competent authority, seeking permission for action. After receiving approval and conducting a preliminary investigation, the allegations against the officials and staff of both the Udupi and Mangaluru RTO offices were confirmed. Consequently, on November 17, a formal case was registered under charges of abuse of power and falsification of documents. The Udupi Lokayukta Police have now officially started their full-fledged investigation.
