Mangaluru : A court in Mangaluru has sentenced a man for defaming his wife by publishing false reports in the media alleging that she had an illicit relationship with a former Member of Parliament. Judge Suresh E.S. of the 3rd Judicial First Class Magistrate (JFMC) Court delivered the verdict, holding the husband accountable for tarnishing his wife’s reputation through malicious publicity.
The convict, identified as Satish Shetty, a resident of Mira Road East in Thane, Mumbai, had a strained relationship with his wife. According to the victim’s complaint, she had been living at her mother’s house due to mental harassment following the birth of their children. On May 13, 2014, the accused reportedly facilitated the broadcasting and publication of news in a private TV channel and two newspapers, falsely claiming that his wife had an immoral relationship with a former MP.
After conducting a detailed trial, the judge found Satish Shetty guilty under Section 509 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The court sentenced him to one year of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹5,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional month of simple imprisonment. Assistant Public Prosecutors Netravati and Geetha Rai represented the prosecution during the proceedings.
