Mangaluru : The Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has achieved a remarkable feat by securing three gold awards at the 9th Conclave on Poka Yoke, Jidoka, and SMED. The event, organized by the Bengaluru Chapter of the Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI), celebrated excellence in operational safety and innovation. In collaboration with Updater Services Ltd (UDS), the airport teams presented cutting-edge solutions based on the Japanese ‘Poka-Yoke’ philosophy, which focuses on mistake-proofing processes to eliminate errors and enhance overall efficiency.
The accolades were distributed across various technical domains of the airport’s operations. A team from UDS, led by Sajith E V and Vijayalakshmi, won gold for creating a remote-controlled hazard-prevention device specifically for high-mast maintenance. Simultaneously, another team featuring Kiran Kumar and Manjunatha was honored for their PLC-based water level monitoring system, a project designed to ensure higher accuracy and reliability in resource management.
Furthermore, the airport’s internal Electrical and Mechanical (E&M) department, represented by Ippsita Choudhury and Siddharth Ojha, earned a third gold award. Their contribution involved Poka-Yoke-based solutions tailored for airside operations and maintenance, effectively reducing human error, operational downtime, and congestion. These prestigious awards highlight Mangaluru International Airport’s steadfast commitment to integrating innovative, safety-driven practices into its daily operations, setting a high standard for airport management in the region.
