Kasaragod : The assembly election results in Kasaragod district have brought a massive success for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). By winning four out of the five constituencies in the district, the UDF successfully capitalized on a strong anti-incumbency wave. This victory is considered historic in political circles as the Congress party managed to reclaim two seats in the district after several decades. While Manjeshwar, Kasaragod, Uduma, and Trikaripur constituencies favored the UDF, the LDF was only able to retain its hold on the Kanhangad seat.
In the Manjeshwar constituency, Muslim League (UDF) candidate AKM Ashraf secured a landslide victory against BJP State President K. Surendran with a record margin of 29,252 votes. Ashraf polled 96,948 votes, breaking a long-standing record from 2001, while Surendran, who received only 67,696 votes, faced a significant political setback. Similarly, the Muslim League strengthened its stronghold in the Kasaragod constituency, where Kallatra Mahin Haji defeated BJP’s Ashwini ML by a margin of 22,698 votes.
The Uduma and Trikaripur constituencies witnessed surprising results delivered by Congress candidates. In Uduma, Congress’s K. Neelakantan defeated CPM MLA C.H. Kunhambu, bringing the seat back to the Congress fold after 37 years. Meanwhile, in Trikaripur, Sandeep Varier—who had joined Congress from the BJP—shattered the CPM bastion to record a historic win as a Congress candidate for the first time in 60 years. This win has completely altered the political equations in the district.
The Kanhangad constituency remained the sole consolation for the LDF in the district. CPI candidate Govindan Pallikkapil managed to retain the seat by defeating UDF’s Shaiji Ottapally with a margin of 15,316 votes. Overall, the district’s results have significantly empowered the Congress-Muslim League alliance while leaving the LDF and NDA camps in deep disappointment.
