Mangaluru : A heroic act of quick thinking and courage saved a passenger’s life at Surathkal Railway Station in Dakshina Kannada district when a railway pointsman risked his own safety to pull a man falling between a moving train and the platform. The dangerous incident occurred as the Madgaon–Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Express (Train No. 10107) was departing the station, avoiding what could have been a fatal accident.
The event unfolded when the passenger attempted to board the train as it slowly gained speed upon receiving the signal. Losing his footing, the man slipped and was about to fall into the narrow gap separating the train coaches from the platform edge. Spotting the imminent danger, pointsman Sandeep Naik, who was on duty nearby, acted instantaneously. Without hesitating for a second, he sprinted towards the moving train and forcefully yanked the passenger back onto the platform before he could get dragged underneath.
Thanks to Naik’s swift intervention, the passenger escaped completely unharmed, and the train was safely dispatched to its next destination shortly after. His exemplary dedication to duty and life-saving bravery earned widespread praise across the region. Recognizing his heroic act, Konkan Railway Chairman and Managing Director Santosh Kumar Jha commended Sandeep Naik and announced a cash reward of ₹10,000 in appreciation of his courage.
