Mangaluru : The 5th National Konkani Charoli Literature Conference 2026 was inaugurated on Sunday at Sahodaya Hall, Balmatta, Mangaluru, by Principal District Government Pleader and Senior Advocate M. P. Noronha. The conference brought together poets and literary enthusiasts from across the country to celebrate the unique tradition of Konkani Charoli poetry. (Facebook )
In his inaugural address, Mr. Noronha observed that the Konkani language enjoys constitutional protection under Articles 29 and 30 of the Constitution of India, safeguarding the cultural and educational rights of linguistic minorities in several States.
Describing poetry as “the language of the heart and the mind,” he remarked that people today prefer brevity in every aspect of life. Referring to commonly used expressions such as “sugarless,” “wireless,” “harmless,” and “fearless,” he said that just as modern life values simplicity and conciseness, readers today have little time for lengthy poems, making four-line Charoli poems increasingly popular.
Mr. Noronha stated that condensing the essence of a long poem into just four lines is a challenging literary exercise requiring profound knowledge of the subject, mastery over language and exceptional creativity. He congratulated Sri Raymond D’Cunha and his team for their dedicated efforts over the years in promoting Konkani Charoli literature.
As a tribute to Sri Raymond D’Cunha’s lifelong sacrifice and service to Konkani literature, Mr. Noronha recited a self-composed four-line Konkani Charoli, which received warm appreciation from the audience.
He further said that Charoli poems should not merely portray life, beauty, nature, love and happiness, but should also create awareness about the rights and duties of Indian citizens and inspire people to become responsible and noble members of society. He urged poets to attain excellence in both language and subject matter and expressed the hope that such conferences would motivate the younger generation to write and appreciate Charoli literature. He concluded by wishing that the fragrance of Konkani Charoli poetry would spread across the world.
The conference was presided over by Sri Raymond D’Cunha, who appreciated the enthusiastic participation of poets from different parts of the country. In his presidential address, he called upon writers and literary enthusiasts to take Charoli literature to every household by inspiring the younger generation to read and compose Charoli poems. He also revealed that for the past six years he has been writing and publishing Konkani Charoli online every day, thereby making a sustained contribution to the promotion of the literary form.
On the occasion, Smt. Arundathi V. Rao (Mangaluru) and Smt. Anni D. Kolwale (Goa) were honoured with the National Konkani Charoli Award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to Konkani Charoli literature.
Sri Elias Fernandes and Sri Gaurish Varnekar from Goa were present on the dais.
The programme commenced with a prayer service led by Rev. Fr. Jerald Lobo, OFM Cap., Superior of St. Ann’s Friary, Mangaluru, invoking God’s blessings on the conference.
Conference President Sri Raymond D’Cunha welcomed the gathering. Smt. Riana D’Cunha, Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks, while Mrs. Nathalia D’Cunha compered the programme.
Poets and literature lovers from Mangaluru, Udupi, Karwar, Goa, Kerala, Hyderabad, New Delhi and several other parts of India participated in the conference, making it a vibrant national celebration of Konkani Charoli literature.
