Mangaluru : Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated with immense devotion and joy across the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi today. Marking the successful completion of the month-long holy Ramadan fast, members of the Muslim community gathered in large numbers at various mosques and Eidgahs to offer collective prayers. Dressed in new traditional attire and applying ‘attar,’ elders and children alike exchanged warm greetings through handshakes and hugs, setting a vibrant tone for the festivities.
Following the Eid prayers and the delivery of the sermon (Khutbah), people visited cemeteries to offer special prayers for their departed family members. The celebration then moved to homes, which were filled with the aroma of special delicacies and traditional sweets. By visiting the houses of neighbors and relatives, the community effectively spread a message of brotherhood and communal harmony.
In Mangaluru, the prayers at the Bawutagudda Eidgah Mosque were led by District Qazi Alhaj Twaka Ahmed Musliyar, while the proceedings at the Bunder Zeenat Baksh Central Jumma Masjid were guided by Sayyid Shamsuddin Basit Ba Alawi Thangal. Similarly, at the Ullal Central Jumma Masjid, Abdul Majeed Faalili Hikami Sakhafi led the prayers. The events saw the participation of several prominent leaders, including Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi and B.J. Hanif Haji.
The occasion was further graced by the visits of political and administrative dignitaries. Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, MLC Ivan D’Souza, and Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy visited the mosques to extend their warm wishes. Speaker U.T. Khader, in his message to the people, prayed that this festival brings peace, happiness, and prosperity to everyone. He specifically highlighted the need for global conflicts to subside and for peace to prevail worldwide, while also offering prayers for those in distress. Through these gestures, the festival was observed as a symbol of peace and unity across the coastal region.
