Mangaluru : Kishore Alva, Executive Director and President of Adani Group, emphasized the necessity of a collaborative approach between the government, the community, and the private sector to preserve and promote the ancient Tulu language and the rich cultural heritage of Tulu Nadu. He was speaking after unveiling a collection of vintage photographs of ‘Old Mangalore,’ captured by veteran photographer Yagna, at the ‘S.U. Paniyadi Tulu Nadu Chavadi’ in Tulu Bhavan, Mangaluru.
Highlighting future initiatives, Mr. Alva mentioned that plans are being considered to collaborate with the Tulu Academy to install visual metaphors and displays representing Tulu culture and language at the Mangaluru International Airport. He noted that it is a heartening development to see people from across the globe showing a keen interest in learning about the history and traditions of the Tulu-speaking region. He praised photographer Yagna for documenting the historical essence of Mangalore through his lens, providing a vital window into the city’s past.
During the event, photographer Yagna was honored with the Tulu Sahitya Academy’s ‘Chavadi Tammana’ award. Dr. Madan Mohan Nayak, a veteran social leader and founder of the Mudipu Tulu Siri Museum, inaugurated the ‘S.U. Paniyadi Tulu Nadu Chavadi’ nameplate. Subhash Chandra Basu, President of Art Kanara Trust, spoke about the historical significance of Yagna’s black-and-white photography, while senior journalist Anita Pinto recalled how those photographs played a crucial role during her career at Taranga weekly.
Presiding over the function, Taranath Gatti Kapikad, President of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy, announced that the exhibition of various photographic series depicting Tulu culture would continue at the Chavadi. Several dignitaries, including Prashanth Kumar Kattemar, senior journalist Anand Shetty, and academy members, were present. The program was welcomed by Registrar Poornima, conducted by Santosh Shetty Hiriyadka, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Udyavara Nagesh Kumar.
