Mangaluru : District health and food safety officials conducted a joint raid on Saturday at a KFC outlet located inside a mall on K.S. Rao Road in Mangaluru, following severe allegations of supplying contaminated food. During the inspection, authorities uncovered highly unhygienic conditions, stale meat stored for several months, and the use of expired cooking oil. Consequently, the outlet was sealed, and food samples were seized to be sent to a state testing laboratory in Mysore for detailed chemical analysis.
The incident came to light after former Mangaluru Mayor and BJP leader Kavitha Sanil ordered Peri-Peri chicken for her 10-year-old child through the online delivery platform Swiggy. Upon receiving the parcel, the child noticed that the meat had turned black and emitted a foul smell. Armed with the purchase bill, Kavitha Sanil immediately visited the KFC outlet at City Centre Mall and brought the matter to the attention of District In-Charge Minister U.T. Khader. Acting swiftly on the Minister’s directives, District Health Officer Dr. H.R. Thimmaiah and District Food Safety Officer Praveen raided the premises to conduct an on-site inspection.
Preliminary investigations revealed that chicken was being supplied to this outlet from Bengaluru and allegedly stored in cold storage for up to 7 to 8 months. Upon entering the storage facility, officials encountered a repulsive odor, and the staff failed to provide satisfactory responses regarding the stored stock. Officers seized three distinct varieties of stored chicken along with expired oil. Further legal action will be initiated against the establishment once the official test results arrive from the Mysore food testing laboratory.
