Mangaluru: The coast of Dakshina Kannada (D.K.) district experienced heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning on Wednesday evening, primarily due to the influence of Cyclone Ditwa developing in the Arabian Sea.
Sullia, Beltangady, and Bantwal taluks witnessed significant rainfall and strong winds. A striking incident was reported in Mallaje village, Padangadi Grama in Beltangady taluk, where a powerful lightning bolt struck an Acacia tree at around 5:30 PM. The impact was so severe that the tree was completely shattered.
The intensity of the lightning strike was evident as the ground beneath the tree was visibly excavated and thrown aside, leaving a large pit at the base of the shattered trunk. Local residents were alarmed by the severity of the strike.
The weather department has forecast that the rain will continue for another two days across the district as the cyclone’s influence persists over the coastal region.
