Mangaluru : A delegation recently met with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss the persistent challenges faced by vehicles legally transporting arecanut through the state. The delegation urged the Chief Minister to take immediate action to protect the interests of farmers, arecanut growers, and traders.
Arecanut, a vital commercial crop in Southern Karnataka, serves as a primary source of livelihood for thousands of farmers. While the produce is regularly transported from various parts of Karnataka to Maharashtra and other states, there have been widespread complaints regarding unnecessary inspections, logistical delays, and transport disruptions in certain regions of Maharashtra. The delegation emphasized how these hurdles are adversely affecting farmers, traders, transporters, and the entire arecanut-based economic ecosystem.
The delegation formally requested the Chief Minister to issue clear directives to the concerned officials to ensure that vehicles carrying arecanut with valid legal documentation are not subjected to arbitrary harassment. They stressed that taking necessary measures to facilitate smooth inter-state trade is essential for safeguarding the livelihoods of the farming and trading communities.
Responding to the concerns raised, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis acknowledged the gravity of the situation. He assured the delegation that he would consult with the officials of the relevant departments and take the necessary steps to ensure that the transport of legally documented arecanut consignments faces no further unnecessary obstacles.
The meeting was attended by prominent figures including Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta, MP B.Y. Raghavendra, former Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, Bantwal MLA Rajesh Naik Ulipadyguthu, MLA Araga Jnanendra, along with representatives from arecanut cooperative societies and key stakeholders from the sector, all of whom highlighted the urgency of resolving these transport issues.
Furthermore, the delegation urged the government to strengthen inter-state coordination to create a permanent solution, ensuring that the movement of arecanut remains seamless and secure, thereby protecting the long-term interests of all stakeholders involved in the trade.
