Visakhapatnam : A catastrophic industrial accident shook the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (Visakhapatnam Steel Plant) in Andhra Pradesh on Monday, claiming the lives of at least eight workers and leaving several others critically injured. The tragedy unfolded when boiling, liquid steel suddenly spilled onto the workers from a massive bucket that was being transported across the facility by an overhead crane.
According to local police officials, the molten steel was at a searing peak temperature of approximately 1600°C when the spill occurred, leaving the victims with no chance of escape. Expressing profound grief over the devastating loss of life, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu immediately ordered all relevant state departments to coordinate swiftly and accelerate the ongoing emergency rescue operations at the site.
The sudden disaster triggered widespread panic and chaos within the massive plant premises, forcing terrified workers to run for their lives. Upon receiving the alert, steel plant authorities and internal security personnel rushed to the scene to battle the resulting flames and contain the hazard. Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Circle Inspector Keshav Rao stated that rigorous efforts are underway to bring the situation completely under control, adding that all injured workers were rushed to nearby hospitals for immediate medical intervention.
While the definitive cause of the technical failure remains unclear in the preliminary investigation, this horrific incident has once again raised serious concerns and critical questions regarding the enforcement of safety protocols and operational standards in heavy manufacturing industries and steel production units across the country.
