Belthangady : The forest department officials carried out a surprise raid in Neriakadu of Neria village under the Belthangady taluk and successfully busted an illegal timber smuggling operation. The swift action was executed by a special team under the direct leadership of Belthangady Range Forest Officer (RFO) Tyagaraj after receiving credible information about the illicit activity.
During the operation, a local resident from Amble, identified as Rajappa Gowda, was caught red-handed while unlawfully cutting down a valuable wild jack (Hebbalasu) tree situated on government land. By the time the forest officials arrived at the spot, the accused had already chopped down the massive tree and processed it into smaller pieces for transportation.
Upon inspecting the site, the forest personnel seized 40 finished wooden planks and 3 large wooden logs derived from the felled tree. Following the confiscation of the timber, the department secured the necessary legal permission from the court on July 2, after which an official case was registered under the Belthangady forest division. Further investigation is underway to look deeper into the logging violation.
