Mangaluru : The foundation stone laying ceremony for the third phase of modernization work at the Mangaluru Fishing Harbour in Dakshina Kannada district was successfully conducted at the South Wharf Bunder. This significant project, spearheaded by the Fisheries Department, has an estimated cost of Rs 3747.10 lakh (37.4710 Crore) and is being executed under the Central Government’s flagship Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
The project was officially launched by Mankal S. Vaidya, the Minister for Fisheries, Ports, and Inland Water Transport, Government of Karnataka, along with D. Vedavyas Kamath, the MLA for Mangaluru South. Their participation marked the start of the crucial upgrade aimed at enhancing the harbour’s capacity and operational efficiency.
The ceremony saw the presence of several key officials and community leaders, including M.A. Gafoor, Chairman of the Coastal Development Board, Government of Karnataka; Chethan Bengre, President of the Trawl Boat Union; and Dinesh Kumar Kalleer, Director of the Fisheries Department, Bengaluru, among others. The modernization project is expected to significantly benefit the local fishing community and boost the region’s marine trade infrastructure.
