Mangaluru : The High Court of Karnataka has expressed deep resentment over the miserable living conditions of animals at Pilikula Biological Park, a premier tourist and educational destination in Dakshina Kannada. During the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by wildlife activist Bhuvan, the bench was infuriated after reviewing photographs showing the plight of the animals. The judges issued a blunt ultimatum to the state government, stating, “If the condition of these voiceless animals is this pathetic, shut down the park immediately.”
The court’s scrutiny revealed a series of alarming lapses, including rusted cages, unhygienic surroundings, and a lack of proper security for the wildlife. Reports presented during the hearing suggested that animals are suffering due to a lack of timely medical treatment and are being forced to consume contaminated water. Furthermore, the court raised concerns regarding the zoo’s legal status, noting that its license had reportedly expired in December 2025, questioning whether the facility is currently operating without a valid permit.
The gravity of the situation is compounded by the fact that the Pilikula management had allegedly ignored a show-cause notice previously issued by the Central Zoo Authority. This blatant negligence by officials has sparked outrage among animal lovers and locals who frequent the park. With the court now taking a hard stand, the future of this popular destination hangs in the balance unless immediate corrective measures are taken to ensure the welfare of the animals.
